How Human Trafficking has Impacted Oklahoma - 1433 Words

Human trafficking is the illegal trade of humans for forced labor and sex labor. Innocent victims are trafficked through lies, fraudulence, and threats. Traffickers deceive them by promises of a better life; they abduct them through fraudulent methods; and they threaten their families to get them to go with them. Human trafficking not only occurs in foreign countries but also in the United States. Oklahoma is also a location where trafficking occurs. Many Oklahomans have personally experienced the negative and terrible effects of human trafficking. Different things occur to victims of human trafficking. Many victims are forced into prostitution or forced into labor. â€Å"A trafficker may offer to smuggle someone into a nation for legitimate†¦show more content†¦Sadly, parents sometimes traffic their own children. A teacher in Missouri found sleeping pills in a female student’s backpack, which prompted an inquiry into the girl’s situation. It was later determined that she was a victim of trafficking to men by her own mother. According to Emily Russell, a human trafficking specialist with the Missouri Sheriff’s Association, â€Å"There’s story after story of parent’s putting their children in this position. Sometimes it’s behind locked doors and sometimes it’s out in front of us in the open.† (Sterling2) A primary location for human trafficking is at truck stops. According to Lieutenant Kimberlin, there are 25 or more truck stops that can hold 20 trucks overnight in Oklahoma. There is a considerable presence at these truck stops. â€Å"But it is difficult to detect since the drivers generally assist in hiding the girls.† (Kimberlin2) Love’s Travel Stop, a well-known chain of truck stops, is also working toward the cause to stop human trafficking. Love’s is planning to sponsor a group called Truckers Against Trafficking later in 2014. Love’s plans to teach workers of their truck stops about trafficking through a training video. This video will show common signs of human trafficking. The purpose of Truckers Against Trafficking is to help the trucking industry recognize that human traffickers are taking advantage of the trucking industry with their trafficking efforts.
